Accused road-trip rapist identified
MARCUS Allyn Keith Martin can now be revealed as the man who police allege detained and repeatedly raped a British backpacker during a nightmare road trip through outback Queensland.
The 23-year-old Cairns man's identity was previously protected under Queensland law, which prohibits the naming of alleged sex offenders until they are committed to stand trial.
The Courier-Mail can reveal his case was referred to the District Court last month after he consented to a registry committal - an administrative procedure that's not open to the public - in the Roma Magistrates Court on almost 20 charges, including rape, assault and deprivation of liberty.
In a shocking case that made international headlines, Martin was accused in March of repeatedly raping a 22-year-old British backpacker and holding her against her will during a 1500km journey through regional Queensland.
The charges arose when police were tipped off that Martin's car was involved in a petrol drive-off at Mitchell in the state's west.
It is alleged Martin was hiding in the back of the Pajero when police pulled the vehicle over and asked about injuries to the woman's face, including facial fractures, scratches, bruising and marks across her neck.
Police say she revealed they were caused by the man with whom she was travelling.
It is understood the pair met in Cairns in late January but their brief relationship soured and police allege the woman was held against her will in a hotel room before the horror road trip through Bowen, Rockhampton, Banana, Roma and finally Mitchell.
One rape charge relates to an alleged offence between February 3 and 28, while three other rape charges and the deprivation of liberty charge relate to their road trip between March 1 and 5.
According to his court file, Martin has not yet entered any pleas.
Some charges have remained in the magistrates jurisdiction, including drug and child pornography offences.
Martin has been behind bars since his arrest on March 5 and bail has been refused. He will face the District Court in Roma at a date that's yet to be determined.
His alleged victim returned to the UK soon after the ordeal and has remained largely silent except for a social media post just days after Martin's arrest.
