Callum soars to new heights in surf world

EVANS Head surfer Callum Robson could on the cusp of a breakout year after winning the NIB Pro Junior event in Newcastle.

Robson, 17, has made the step up and competed in events on the Qualifying Series in recent months.

He was one of a handful of Far North Coast surfers who competed in the Tweed Coast Pro at Cabarita and has been a regular in the junior ranks across Australia.

Some of his best performances include the Rip Curl GromSearch win on the Sunshine Coast two years ago and a semi-final appearance in the Pro Junior at Bells Beach in Victoria last month.

His Newcastle victory came in a four-man final with a 13.10 (out of a possible 20) enough to seal the win

"Conditions were pumping all day and then it just got a bit messy in the semis and the final, but it was still fun waves out there,” Robson said.

"I just wanted to get one good score and then a backup straight away but I did it the other way round.

"It worked out for me in the end. It's a great boost for the next comp at Manly.”

The Sydney Pro Junior will be held next weekend and will run in conjunction with the Surf Pro event on the Qualifying Series.

Meanwhile, Tweed Heads surfer Alyssa Lock added another win to her long list of achievements when she won the junior women's division.

Lock has been in competition for over six years already and is always a consistent performer.

"It's not my biggest win but it's definitely a confidence booster as my second Pro Junior win,” Lock said.

"I won last year in WA, but missed Bells last month because I was at a 6000 (surf event) in Florida.

"I finished school last year and can concentrate on my surfing goals in 2018 and I'm really looking forward to competing.”

She will be back in competition at the Australian Boardriders Battle in Newcastle this weekend.
